We are seeking a detail‑oriented and motivated Bookkeeper/Payroll Specialist to join our team in Belleville, IL. This role will typically require 30–32 hours per week, with increased hours (40 hours per week) during quarterly payroll tax return periods in January, April, July, and October. Also open to candidates who are looking for full-time work. Employees working 30+ hours per week are eligible for benefits.
The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting knowledge, excellent customer service, and a positive, team‑focused attitude. An associate degree in accounting, business administration, or related field—or equivalent professional experience—is preferred. Experience with QuickBooks is helpful but not required.
This position supports a wide range of clients across multiple industries by providing general accounting services and comprehensive payroll support.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, organize, and electronically file client tax returns and financial documents
- Process and prepare client payroll, including monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll tax filings
- Prepare state sales tax returns
- Perform data entry and processing for accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Maintain and update journal entries; provide support for QuickBooks users
- Maintain accurate, thorough documentation in accordance with firm policies and GAAP
- Manage payroll data collection, calculation, entry, and updates
- Compile summaries of earnings, taxes, and deductions; prepare all required payroll tax returns
- Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual client reports
- Ensure accurate filing of all tax documents in compliance with applicable regulations
- Communicate proactively with clients to deliver timely, high‑quality service
Required Skills & Experience
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, or related field; relevant work experience may substitute for formal education
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience with QuickBooks, Sage, Accounting CS, or other accounting/tax software preferred but not required
- Strong analytical, organizational, and time‑management skills
- Prior experience in customer service, data entry, bookkeeping, payroll, or administrative office work
- Ability to manage multiple projects and handle increased workload during tax season (January–April)
- Willingness to work additional hours during peak seasons, including some evenings and weekends
